Wisconsin 4-H and Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest Takes Place

Barron County’s senior dairy bowl team and Sheboygan County’s senior dairy management team topped the State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Management Contests on January 30 in Madison.
The quiz bowl team will represent Wisconsin in November at the national contest in Louisville, KY and the Management Contest team will represent Wisconsin at the All American Dairy Show Youth Management contest in Harrisburg, PA. Also in quiz bowl Shawano County earned top honors as the winning mixed division team, while Winnebago finished first in the junior division. For the management contest Dodge County won first prize for the mixed division and Richland County took home top honors for the junior division.

The quiz bowl competition tested the quick wit and extensive knowledge of more than 200 4-H members of 36 county teams. Contestants answered questions about dairy cattle genetics, health, nutrition, showing and other topics. Three and Four-person teams and their alternates traveled from all corners of the state to represent their counties in the three divisions.

Teams from 14 counties vied for first place in the junior division, which includes contestants 14 years of age and under. The Winnebago County team topped the competition with team members Melanie Zillges, Brooke Zillges, Hunter Crowley, and Ben Stone. The team was coached by Amy Jo Domke.

Fourteen counties competed in the mixed division, which includes both junior and senior team members. The team from Shawano County topped the mixed division. Team members were Jen Krull, Mason Jauquet, Cooper Uelmen, Whitney Ferfecki and the team was coached by Heather Jauquet.

Eight senior teams with youth between the ages of 15 and 19 competed. The seniors from Barron County went undefeated this year to claim the 4-H Dairy Bowl title and the right to compete at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville this fall beating out a tough Polk county team in the finals. The Barron County team members were Kelli Marschall, Abigail Solum, and Megan Marschall. The team was coached by Chuck, Cathy, and Isaac Solum.

2nd – Polk
3rd – Dodge

Mixed Quiz Bowl
1st – Shawano
2nd – Wood
3rd – Brown

Junior Quiz Bowl
1st – Winnebago
2nd – Richland
3rd – Wood
The dairy management contests tests youth on their practical knowledge of the dairy industry. Youth were tested on their knowledge of cow parts, identifying and using common tools used in the dairy industry, and working as a team to problem solve.

The team from Richland County was first in the junior contest. Team members were Calli Storms, Logan Turgasen, Zach Nelson, and Brock Nelson. In the mixed division the top team was from Dodge County with team members Ben Buske, Grady Wendorf, Matthew Gunst, and Elizabeth Gunst. In the senior division, Sheboygan County won first place and the opportunity to continue on to the national competition in Harrisburg. Team members were Erica Helmer, Eliese Bleck, Jared Vanderweele, and Dallas Kreisa.

UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science faculty, Badger Dairy Club members, UW dairy science alumni, and other Wisconsin dairy industry professionals helped with moderating, judging and operating the contest. The event was co-sponsored by the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Endowment Fund, the UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science, UW-Extension and the Badger Dairy Club.
