BOWIE, MARYLAND (August 18, 2015) – The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) recorded its 1 millionth genotyped animal earlier this month. “This is reason to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and our international partners in Canada, United Kingdom and Italy,” says João Dürr, CDCB chief executive officer.
In recognition of reaching this milestone, CDCB invites bovine genetics stakeholders to attend its 2015 Industry Meeting, Sept. 29, at the Madison Marriott West Hotel and Conference Center, Middleton, Wis. This event coincides with the first day of World Dairy Expo.
“CDCB assembles representatives from all sectors of the dairy breeding industry and serves as a forum to facilitate communications among stakeholders, agricultural research institutes and academia,” says Dürr. With this in mind, the CDCB 2015 Industry Meeting features two panel discussions – “Status of Dairy Cattle Breeding Research in the United States” and “One Million Genotypes: How Genomics Reshaped the Dairy Industry.”
The first panel discussion will highlight current U.S. dairy cattle research, along with identifying future challenges and opportunities. The second panel discussion will review the transforming impact of genomics to the dairy industry. “To the best of our knowledge, this (1 million) is the largest single SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) data repository in the world, including human genomic databases,” says Dürr.
CDCB 2015 Industry Meeting presentations include CDCB Strategic Business Model, USDA-ARS Research Portfolio and Perspectives, History of Genomic Evaluations in the United States, Sire Procurement after Genomics, Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory Technical Report, Importance of Enhancing the Phenotypic Records Pipeline in the Genomic Era, Genomics and Breed Composition, and Using Genomics as a Management Tool.

CDCB conducts genetic evaluations for economically important traits of dairy cattle. The CDCB allied partners cooperator database is the largest in the world, which is devoted to dairy animals, with approximately 70 million female phenotypic records and more than 300,000 males receiving genetic evaluations or genomic predictions.
