Convention Begins with Tours

Windsor, CA

The National Holstein Convention in California is underway as

Convention tours kick off the 2009 event held in Sacramento. Over 75

people from across the US made their way north to Sonoma County to

visit premium wineries and Holsteins.

The official Convention tour kicked off at McClelland’s Dairy in Petaluma, which is known for it’s quality Holsteins and artisan organic butter. Then the group was on to J Winery and a private luncheon at Richard & Saralee Kunde’s Grove.

Before heading to San Francisco for the evening, the group made a stop

at Ocean View Farms. Ocean View Farms is selling the “Pick of their

Herd” in the 2009 Convention Sale. You can check out information on this

once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and find scenes from the Convention

Open House at Ocean View at www.generationsofexcellence.com.

Lodi, CA
Host day tours included a stop at the well-known Van Exel Dairy - home of Exel's Holsteins and Jerseys.  Hank and Carolyn Van Exel along with their family extended their hospitality to over 300 visitors Sunday. The tour was of the Van Exel's dairy #2 that houses the Show cattle along with a select herd of Holsteins and Jerseys.  Dairy #1 is the home to the remainder of the Holstein herd.
Visitors were able to see favorites such as Quaresma Derry Farren (EX-94), Ms Air-Osa PS Cali 10064-ET (VG-87 Shottle owned with Joey Airosa), Exels Pronto Timone (EX-90-EX-MS) Highest indexing Pronto daughter.
Convention goers on this tour were also taken to the Van Ruiten  Family Winery for a wine tasting. John Van Ruiten is a dairy farmer turned vineyard owner.  They currently farm over 800 acres of wine grapes in the Lodi, CA area.  The winery itself was built in 2000 and they have gathered many awards for their wines including the honor of best Zin.
After leaving the winery, the tour buses were loaded and the group was treated to a scenic drive through California farmland to the sale grounds.
